Anita Duncan, 2004 Labor Co-Chair

The 2004 CFC Campaign was a success because federal employees know when it is time to set aside our many differences and join together to help those in need.  Our theme was “Make a Difference, The Power of You.”  This theme proved to be a powerful motivator that we were all able to embrace that resulted in us exceeding our goals.  As a Union leader, it was uplifting to work side by side with both managers and employees at all levels to contribute to a charity and a cause that is so much bigger than us.

There are no words to articulate our gratitude to and appreciation of you.  However, I thank you for the time, money, and/or whatever support that you donated to CFC last year.  In fact, let’s start thinking about how to make the 2005 campaign more exciting than last year’s!

I have the honor of serving once again as the 2005 CFC Labor Co-Chair and am looking forward to working with you in our continued efforts to helping those in our community.

Henry Palacios, 2004 Co-Chair

All of us have had experiences working on projects that are particularly long or arduous.  There’s always a sense of relief at the end.  And if you’ve done the job particularly well, there is a sense a satisfaction.  I always get such feelings at the end of a census.  The 2004 Combined Federal Campaign yielded some of these same feelings and many more.  As Co-Chair of the campaign, I set out with high expectations, some anxiety, and virtually no plan to accomplish the task at hand.  By mid Fall, expectations had been tamed, our plan was executed, yet anxiety levels were frighteningly high!   There was some doubt we would reach our goal of raising 2.75 M dollars.  As the month of December wore on, our anxiety surrendered to the realization that not would our goal be met, but we would exceed the record amount raised in 2003 raising a record amount  $2,791,597.

As we look back, what are the lessons learned?  In the final analysis, it’s all about the employees who make up our Federal community; it has to do with their dedication, their willingness to share and serve others.  I’m especially honored to have worked beside those who served in our cabinet.   All of them served with a sense of noble purpose, perseverance, and resourcefulness that put focus in our campaign.  And a few cabinet staff went well beyond what was expected, injecting such creativity and thought into their work that the campaign bore their imprimatur.  A new campaign theme, coordinated promotional material, and redesigned training are all things we can be proud of.  But you can’t speak of the people without mentioning the Federal employee base we served.  There is much to be proud of in their level of caring and charity.  In the end it was their participation that made us successful.

And on the “bright side of the road” we traveled, I see hope for 2005; new employees appear to be stepping into the spotlight with unheard of levels of contributions.  Their leadership will make all the difference to future campaigns.  Some day we’ll figure out how to increase participation in CFC so that everyone sees that even nominal gifts to the campaign make great contributions to the lives of those in need.  I believe we have the right people to make that happen in Kansas City .  Thank you for letting me share in your success
