April 14, 2005

Location & Time: A Teleconference was hosted at the Federal Aviation Administration, 901 Locust Street , Kansas City , MO 64106 at 09:00 a.m. Three members met in a local conference room and the others joined us at 816-329-2480 using code 563864.  This meeting lasted approximately 45 minutes.

Committee members in attendance: Sharon Blackmon, Carla Farris, Larry Hisle, Belinda Johnson, Henry Mendoza, Marcy Nelson, Michele Nelson, Terry Penland, Daryl Sprague, Paige Wymore-Wynn.

Committee members called in as unavailable: Tina Atkins, Nadine Johnson

 Agenda

1.)  Review the graphic created by Carla Farris and discuss changes to enhance its ability to represent the 2005 Heartland CFC theme “Every 1 of Us – Turning HOPE Into Reality”.

      Outcome:

We started by asking Carla to share with us her vision for the graphic she had created.  Carla provided the following notes:

Heart - the Heartland, Giving from the heart, etc.

Eagle: The eagle is a symbol of the theme itself. Years ago, the eagle was on the endangered list. The hope was to bring them back, and with a lot of effort, the reality today is that the Bald Eagle has come back, and although still protected can be removed from the endangered/threatened list. Definitely an example of turning hope into reality.

National Bird - for federal employees

Soaring eagle - hope that Heartland CFC will soar this year.

Flag  flying high in blue sky - represent Federal Employees, the Land itself, and because I can't think of anything more beautiful than our flag flying high in a bright blue sky.   A perfect backdrop for any graphic I do.

 Pictures around the heart:

Soldier - representative of what's going on today, the hope that our military personel will return safely, and the reality that we are making a difference in what's going on.  And the hope that they will be returning home soon.

the grandfather & baby girl - The hope for tomorrow

The military man (on right side of heart) - This one was pulled off the video, I thought he represented not only the military but federal workers as a whole.

The picture of the doctor & patient - representative of some of the work that is done, with CFC funds.

The little boy in the life jacket - he looked like he had just completed a major accomplishment, and that the funds from CFC had made this a reality.

The remaining pictures were selected because they included a diversity of people and issues.

A section of the picture within the heart - for every one of us, regardless of who you are or what your situation is, there is some part of CFC that can touch your heart...turning hope into reality.

After Carla’s explanation the committee members discussed items that would enhance the graphic from their perspectives.  The comments/suggestions included:

·         A bit too busy

·         Needs to be balanced

·         Consider printing issues

·         Shrink the size of the heart

·         Move the pictures to the outer edge of the heart

·         Clarify the pictures

·         Use sharper graphic for “Every 1 of US”

Daryl mentioned we do have agencies with graphics department that can help take our ideas and fine-tune them if that would be helpful.  In this case Carla said she could make the changes.

Clarification (not part of the meeting): The graphic Carla has prepared will be used as a cover for the catalog.  We are still looking for a Heartland CFC Logo to use in marketing.  They are two unique items.  Perhaps the following example will clarify the difference using the Gateway CFC logo along side of the National CFC logo.

National CFC Logo

Gateway CFC Logo

Combined Federal Campaign - Heartland

Notice how the National CFC logo was carried into the St Louis Gateway CFC logo along with their local identifier.  In our case we are looking to accomplish the same thing using a heart and replace the Gateway with Heartland.  Think about possibilities and make any suggestions you have to accomplish this goal.

 TO DO LIST:

                                    1.            Make adjustments to the graphic based upon comments during the Telcon and get the updated version to Daryl for the CFC Cabinet Meeting (Wednesday, April 20).
Volunteers: Carla Farris

                                    2.            Create a sample graphic to represent the local Heartland Area CFC.  That will be a Logo for use in various ways to market our organization (letterhead, Web site, give away items, etc.).
Volunteers: Carla Farris

2.)  Committee Members Report on their projects as needed:

Canvasser Training Materials: Henry Mendoza reported he had completed his review of the canvasser training materials.  He recommends updating the logo’s with our new one once it is ready.  Also, clarifying the Donor Recognition levels once the Cabinet has determined what will be used this year.

Outcome:

Waiting on decisions to be finalized at the Cabinet level for Logo, awards, etc.

TO DO LIST:

                                    1.            No action required at this time
Volunteers:

3.)  New items of business (Larry Hisle asked to add this item to the agenda):

New Brochure: Heartland CFC needs a simple folded brochure that tells what CFC is for distribution to new Federal Employees.  The goal is to educate the reader (Federal Employees, Military, etc.), in a marketing style (a few words with impact and good graphics and pictures), about one benefit of working for the Federal Government – namely “CFC”.  Briefly describe the opportunity “CFC Payroll Deductions” provides people to contribute to other people’s lives.  Perhaps even mentioning the fact that there are annual campaigns giving them an opportunity to participate.

E.g. Use in “Agency New Hire Packages” and at the Military Entrance Processing Stations.

Heartland CFC would be the first to have this resource.  It would help educate people about CFC.

Outcome:

The committee agreed to take this project on.  We will draft a brochure and present it to the Cabinet as a proposal.

TO DO LIST:

                                    1.            Create a draft brochure with ideas that will tell what CFC is
Volunteers: Marcy Nelson

Review Catalogs: Review catalogs and make recommendations to the Cabinet about improvements to the 2005 Heartland CFC Catalog.

Outcome:

The committee had a volunteer that wanted to review the materials and make a recommendation.  Perhaps additional people will be able to participate in this effort once we get some ideas from the first review.

 TO DO LIST:

                                    1.            Review the catalogs Larry Hisle provided and draft a recommendation for updates to the 2005 Heartland CFC Catalog for the committee.
Volunteers: Sharon Blackmon
